The beautiful thing about being creative in some way, especially if you’re not planning on sharing the results, is that it helps you feel good about yourself. Also, if you make a habit of being creative, you are never bored.
If you’re angry, you can make an angry drawing, sing an angry song, write an angry poem, splash some angry paint around, dance an angry dance, make some angry music, write an angry story, whatever, it’ll help you get over it. You’re expressing it, then moving on. Your angry painting might not look like much but that doesn’t matter because you didn’t do it to show anyone, you did it because it feels good, because you’ve taken the energy of the anger and directed it in a positive way. It’s better to do an angry dance or go through that karate kata with a lot of punch, than punch someone in the face. You can give a great big juicy angry honk too. Honk it out, then drop it.
Dropping it is very important. If you keep thinking about what made you angry, you’ll just get angry all over again. So recognise your anger (sadness or whatever) honk it out, then move on.
Of course, you can also create when you’re feeling peaceful or funny or contemplative or sad or anything, and you might even come up with something worth sharing with someone else. If so, terrific. If not, it doesn’t matter , because that’s not why you did it. When you feel good, express your joy and enjoy it. Even without expressing your unhappiness, just working on something creative helps you leave the unhappiness behind simply because you forget about it.
Everyone is creative. We all create our own lives, and we can create a happy one or an unhappy one. A lot of things in life aren’t within our control, but our mind is and we can use it in ways that make us happy or unhappy. Once we know how it works, it’s our choice, and doing something creative can be a way to get over a bad mood as well as being a source of joy and satisfaction.
Leave a honk if you like this, (as in HONK!) Do you have a creative pursuit? Does it help you be happy?
